In print design, if you want your patterns to stand out, fluorescent pigments are your best friend. But while they look amazing, they're not so easy to use—you've got to get the color mixing, fabric choice, dosage, and washing methods just right. Otherwise, the glow fades, the color washes out, and all your hard work goes to waste. Here are some practical tips to help you get the best glow possible from your fluorescent pigments:
- 1.When matching colors: If the colors of fluorescent paint are too different, such as yellow-green and purple-red, they will interfere with each other, weakening the fluorescence or even emitting no light; if mixed with ordinary pigments, the fluorescence will also dim. So it is best to use fluorescent colors with similar colors together.
2. There is an upper limit on the amount used: the more paint is used during printing, the brighter the fluorescence will be, but it is up to about 30%, and there is no obvious improvement (it may waste materials).
3. The smoother and whiter the fabric, the better the effect: it is particularly bright when printed on clean and flat white cloth (such as white poplin and satin); but the fluorescent effect will be weakened on fabrics with uneven surfaces and dark colors such as flannel.
4. The arrangement of printing also has a great influence on fluorescence. If one more pattern is printed, some fluorescence will be reduced. Therefore, considering the fluorescence, the later the printing is, the better (but attention should be paid to color transmission). However, considering the fastness of the paint, it is generally better after pressing and rolling. To ensure that the color remains bright and washable, it is generally recommended to put it in the second last step.
5. After printing with fluorescent paint, hot air baking is more effective than steam (steaming) to make the color more solid. When washing, in order not to damage the fluorescence, cold or warm water is generally used, and soap is not used (that is, strong washing without adding detergent).
6. To maintain the rich color and fluorescence, the amount of fluorescent paint used in printing is much higher than that of general paint. Once fluorescent paint is used too much, it is easier to be washed off by water or rubbed off (that is, the fastness becomes worse). To make it "not easy to fall off", two things need to be done: 1. Add more adhesive (glue) to help the paint stick firmly to the cloth; 2. The paint particles should be small and uniform (about 0.7 microns are suitable), not too coarse or unevenly distributed, otherwise, it is easy to fade.
7. The choice of emulsifier affects the fastness: if an emulsifier called A pulp is used instead of M agent, the color will fade easily when washing.
8 .Don't let salts destroy emulsifiers. Emulsifier M has emulsifying and thickening effects. Generally, the dosage should not exceed 3% to 4%. Some emulsifiers (such as M) are very afraid of electrolytes, such as ammonium sulfate. Once they come into contact with them, they will "clump", and the paint will become ineffective, thin, and lose its gloss. So don't add salt-containing ingredients when mixing colors.
