Bright Ideas: Using Fluorescent Pigments in Paper Coating Applications

The surface of ordinary paper is not smooth or bright enough, and the printed pattern will be dim. Adding some pigments, adhesives and additives to the coating can make the paper smoother, more colorful and more suitable for printing. Traditional coatings can only make the paper look whiter and flatter, but adding fluorescent pigments can make it brighter.

The little secret of fluorescent pigments in the coating:
how to disperse it without lumps?

Fluorescent pigment particles are easy to stick together, which makes them uneven, and their effect as a coating is also poor. Generally, special dispersants are used, and high-end equipment (equivalent to high-speed stirring) is used to break up the lumps to ensure that there is pigment in every coating and the light is uniform.

The principle of fluorescent pigment luminescence:

The molecules in the fluorescent pigment absorb ultraviolet light or blue light (short-wave light) and then emit visible light (long-wave light). This process makes the brightness of the coating 30%~50% higher than that of ordinary paper.

Formula tips:

  1. Fluorescent pigment dosage: 0.5%~5% is enough, too much will be too thick and can't be spread flat;
  2. Particle size control: It is best not to exceed 5 microns (1/16 of the thickness of a hair); too large particles will affect the uniformity of luminescence.
  3. Selection of additives: Commonly used non-ionic or weakly acidic dispersants can disperse without affecting the surface smoothness.

What should be paid attention to in coating and drying?

  1. Slurry preparation: first, add adhesive resin and ordinary filler, and then use equipment to break up the fluorescent pigment;
  2. Adjust viscosity: The goal is 15~25 seconds/4mm (measured with a special viscosity for coating), so that the layer can be evenly distributed and the edge can be prevented.
  3. Coating method: knife scraping, roller or spraying are all OK, the speed is generally 80~150 meters/minute;
  4. Drying temperature: 60~90℃ is enough, too high may damage the luminous performance of the pigment.
